Pete went to Vietnam in 1968 as a Private First Class.
On November 14 of that year, while serving as a cannoneer with Battery B, 1st Battalion, 92nd Artillery, he distinguished himself through exceptional heroism. When the battery’s position came under an intense enemy artillery, rocket, and mortar attack, Pete courageously manned his section’s howitzer and returned fire. Undaunted by rounds falling all around him, he put the battery’s mission above his own safety and worked feverishly to defend the position. For his courage under fire, Pete received the Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device, as described in his citation from Lieutenant Colonel G. G. Young, United States Army. He was proud of his country and his service and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.
After his service, Pete met and married his soulmate, Simone. He began working in construction and eventually started his own company, JPM Construction Corp. He mastered his craft, with a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. Those who worked with him over the years remember him as funny and inspiring.
Pete and Simone raised their two sons, Gregory and James, together. A devoted family man, Pete loved taking his family fishing and camping. He was a supportive, understanding father who gave great advice and generously shared his talents and knowledge. Pete and Simone shared 47 years together before the effects of Agent Orange exposure took his life.
It’s been eight years now, and Pete is in our hearts and thoughts every day. When we’re together as a family, we love to share stories and remember the funny comments he made that still make us smile and laugh.
