John Clancy served in the United States Army and was discharged in 1951.
He returned to Mansfield College in Pennsylvania to complete his teaching degree and graduated in August 1952. After hitchhiking to interviews, he was hired to teach fifth grade in Goshen, New York, by Superintendent of Schools Charles J. Hooker.

John taught fifth grade in Goshen until 1981. He was an usher at St. John’s Catholic Church, served with the Cataract Fire Department’s Fire Police, and taught adult education classes to help people prepare for United States citizenship. He also worked many summers at the Goshen Historic Track.
John lived on Wickham Avenue for more than 50 years. He and his wife, Mary, shared over 60 years of marriage and raised five children: Mary Ellen, John Martin, Judy, Eileen, and Jean Marie.
He loved Goshen, and Goshen loved him.
We are so proud to have this flag flying in his honor.
