Apr. 29, 2018 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS YEAR'S EVENT:
At the brunch we will be presenting this year’s Hummingbird Awards (see the “I Will Be A Hummingbird” story below for an explanation) to community member Amanda Langseder, local businessman and philanthropist Sal Scancarello, Monticello Rotarian Orshii Boldis, Liberty Rotary Club Secretary and Past President Gary Silverman and Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties with our club’s Hummingbird Award.
We will also be recognizing Liberty Rotarians Dr William Silver and Lori Rae Silvers (Paul Harris Fellow Plus 2), and community member Etta Barbanti as our newest Paul Harris Fellows. This recognition acknowledges individuals as outstanding Rotarians who have demonstrated the Four Way Test and performed Service Above Self. The suggested donation for the brunch is $15 and will benefit our club’s Haiti Clean Water Program Sustainability Fund which has been established to provide necessary supplies and support to the 1000 Haitian families that have received water filtration systems as a result of the global grant from the Rotary Foundation. These systems are providing healthy, clean, potable water to as many as 7500 men, women and children in Cap Haitien. All guests will have an opportunity to make a donation to the sustainability fund which will help provide these families with healthy, clean, potable water well past the 4 ½ years that the grant covers.
To make a reservation, please contact committee member Gary Siegel (845 798-2188 or cdtripsLLC@gmail.com) at your earliest convenience. There is a limit of 150 guests and we do anticipate that this event will sell out. Reservations will be accepted until April 24th or until sold out. If you are unable to attend, kindly consider becoming a sponsor and/or making a donation (see attached sponsor and donation form). I WILL BE A HUMMINGBIRD
We are constantly being bombarded by problems that we face and sometimes we can get completely overwhelmed. The story of the Hummingbird is about this huge forest being consumed by a raging wild fire. All the animals in the forest come out and they are transfixed as they watch the forest burning and they feel very overwhelmed….very powerless…. Except for this little hummingbird who says “I’m going to do something about the fire” so it flies to the nearest stream, takes a drop of water, puts it on the fire and goes up and down, up and down, up and down as fast as it can. In the meantime all the other animals… much bigger animals like the elephant… with a BIG trunk, who could bring much more water…. they are standing there helpless and they are saying to the hummingbird, “What do you think you can do? You’re too little…This fire is too big… Your wings are too little…. And your beak so small… you can only bring a small drop of water at a time but as they continue to discourage it, it turns to them without wasting anytime and tells them…. “I’m doing the best I can… I’m doing what I can!...I’m doing my part” In order to make your community a better place, in order to make the world a better place, we must all be hummingbirds.
On behalf of the Liberty Rotary Club, we would like to cordially invite you to to become a sponsor of our club's 3rd Annual Hummingbird Award and Paul Harris Fellow Recognition Brunch to be held at the New Hope Community in Loch Sheldrake on Sunday April 29th from 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM.
This year there is the opportunity for your club to sponsor the event as we will be distributing a "Keepsake Journal" and have Special Placemats for you to send a message to the honorees and/or advertise your business. All proceeds from the sponsorships will benefit the Liberty Rotary Club's Haiti Clean Water Program Sustainability Fund. Attached please find the sponsor form. If your club would like to participate as a sponsor for this year's event, kindly fill out the attached form and send your payment along with the artwork to
Liberty Rotary Club or email information and artwork to cdtripsLLC@gmail.com. Sponsorship submissions are due by 4/19/18. Please make checks out to: Liberty Rotary Club Haiti Clean Water Program Thanks for your anticipated support and we hope to see you on April 29th. Sincerely,

The 9th Annual Sweitzer Cup Tournament benefitting the Timothy Sweitzer Memorial Fund HISTORY OF THE CUP - In 1996, during his senior year of High School, Timothy J. Sweitzer, a star soccer player and soon to be Johns Hopkins freshman was tragically killed in a car accident. In the years that followed a scholarship was presented in his name to a student exemplifying his attributes as a scholar-athlete. Eventually the monies that funded the scholarship dried up and it ceased to be presented. In 2009, friends gathered for a memorial poker tournament to celebrate the life of their friend and to raise money to beautify his plot in the cemetery where he was laid to rest. Over the course of the event former teammates began to reminisce about the glory days on the pitch and less than a year later teams from Tim's high school, John S. Burke Catholic, and their cross town rival, Goshen, we're lacing up their cleats to settle the score once last time. After the success of the 2010 soccer friendly between the two rival schools, some of Tim's former teammates—from Pine Bush, where Tim grew up, and Washingtonville, where Tim played club soccer—demanded a shot at what has become known as the Sweitzer Cup. By the time the second annual Sweitzer Cup kicked off in August 2011 a total of 8 teams from Orange County vied for the Cup. In 2012, the Sweitzer Cup continued to expand and featured the first ever women’s soccer friendly. The next year the tournament expanded to 10 teams and showcased an exhibition match of local youth programs. In 2014, as the Sweitzer Cup entered its 5th year, the tournament featured a record 12 teams; including Vernon High School, the first ever team from outside of Orange County and New York State. Last year’s Cup netted in excess of $8,000+ in fundraising proceeds bringing the Fund’s total just shy of $23,000. MISSION STATEMENT The goal of the Sweitzer Cup and the affiliate charity, the Timothy J. Sweitzer Memorial Foundation, has always been two-fold: first and foremost our goal is to memorialize Tim, to ensure that his legacy, one of competitive spirit and camaraderie, of passion and compassion, of excellence both on and off the field, is eternalized. Second, our goal has been to give back to the community that gave so much to us and to Tim. In the coming years it is our vision to build a top flight soccer field and eventually an entire complex in the greater Hudson Valley bearing his name, where children of all backgrounds--racial, socioeconomic and educational--will be able to develop leadership and teamwork skills in effort to provide a breeding ground for the next generation of Tim Sweitzers. We realize this is a lofty and long term goal—but this tournament has proven it has staying power. This philanthropic prong also includes a plan to replenish the scholarship bearing Tim’s name and will be looking to award to students who embody the attributes that made Tim so special – both on and off the field. |

The training lasts approximately 45 minutes and teaches students how to recognize and react to an overdose on opiods, including administration of Narcan. If given correctly, in conjuction with rescue breathing and CPR if needed, the use of Naloxone can reverse the overdose and save lives. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 52,404 lethal drug overdoses in 2015. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic, with 20,101 overdose deaths related to prescription pain relievers, and 12,990 overdose deaths related to heroin in 2015. The clinical director for the program is Dr. Pamela Murphy of Orange Regional Medical Center. |
